Tucson to Austin

  • 52 – Lone Star RV Resort & McKinney Falls State Park. Sun Resorts recently purchased Lone Star and it is being renovated. Heard that a new park is opening soon North-west of Austin in Hill Country. McKinney Falls is very nice with big sites – interesting that the park is surrounded by major development. Survived two big thunderstorms whilst at both parks – our youngest son landed in the first on at 1:00 am (after being diverted to Houston for a few hours). Loved the parks on both sides of the river. Visited 6th Street bars (west side, not dirty east side) with our son – still interesting – but is less country music. Visited Rainey Street twice (once with our son) – many good restaurants and bars with live music along a single street – really liked Craft Pride. Visited one of local distilleries out towards hill country – Deep Eddy Vodka. Visited Fredricksberg for german food and site seeing. Visited Fat Ass and William Chris wineries on the way back to Austin. Talked to the wine guy @ William Chris who gave us a lot of information about wines and New Orleans. Enjoyed Texas BBQ @ Terry Blacks in Austin, Salt Lick outside of Austin and Valentina’s Tex Mex BBQ for great tacos. Want to go back and visit Moontower Saloon next time. Also want to visit Inks Lake and get to know the couple we met in Lasjitas. Purchased our Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport in New Braunfels – got a late start on buying a hitch so we can tow it behind the Vista. 42 – Orange Grove RV Resort for a night. Our standby place to stay near Bakersfield off Hwy 99.
  • 51 – Greenlake RV Park. Relatively new RV resort. First thunderstorm, especially in Central Texas! Visited the Pearl District then walked downtown to the River Park. The main part was very nice. Impressed with the landscaping and the buildings along the river for several miles towards the Pearl District – many restaurants, bars, apartments and businesses all along the river – everything built above the river. The local park and zoo is just huge. Could have spent a couple of days looking around. Had beer at @ Mad Pecker brewery – people talking to Rio mentioned Pig Pen for great food and beer. Had a great brunch @ Pig Pens (part of Smoke Shack). Spent a day driving the city doing errands – everything is spread out so much.
  • 50 – Fort Stockton RV Park. Transition RV park for people traveling Hwy 10. Very windy so not visiting town this time.
  • 49 – Maverick RV Resort – dark sky community – so many stars. Met a lot of people from Michigan and other great lake states. Same for Texans. Became friends with staff @ the park and got invited to a evening BBQ. Big Bend National Park is huge! Awesome experience. Crossed river in a row boat to visit a Mexican border town called Boquilles – official port of entry. Rode donkeys into town where we got a tour and had local food and drinks (including local goat). Drove to Presidio, but decided to not to visit Mexican border town – bought some incredible Mexican baked goods. Watched sunset nearby. Had some great Texas BBQ. Very hot for most of the visit – low 90s and 100s – big winds on last day and travel day to Fort Stockton. Will be back!
  • 48 – Macmillen RV park. Nice little town. Old Fort Davis. Local observatory.
  • 47 – Koa north of Carlsbad. Visited Carlsbad Caverns. Awesome experience. Planning on visiting Guadalupe Mountains National Park and Roswell to the see the Aliens.
  • 46 – KOA. Nice drive-in site looking over the valley of Las Cruces. Drove east to visit White Sands National Monument – simply awesome – all those dunes of gypsum over many acres. Glimpsed the missile range nearby. Drove up to Elephant Butte and Truth or Consequences for walk with Rio. Then stopped in Hatch to buy local Green Chiles and had late lunch @ Spanky’s where food and drink all had green chili. Drove to Mesilla nearby for local flavor and bought local Pecans. Had a good time with Rio @ local farmer’s market where we bought local honey and chili infused Jambly.
