Next day, it was raining and we listened to concert in the park – Rio not allowed in the park. Had coffee and scones at a cafe near the lake park. Drove to Harrison via the scenic highway around the lake. Had appetizers @ an interesting coffee and beer and bike place called The Cycle Haus Bikes and Brews. First day was warm but 2nd and 3rd days were raining.

  • 83 – Holiday KOA. Many sites very close; although, we have a nice big site near the pond. Visited Pictograph Caves State Park – nice but most of the drawings are gone. Lots of breweries in town. A couple of parks near the Yellowstone river. Watched a dog being trained with various toys including a duck with shotgun blast to send it into the middle of the river – the black lab swam out and intercepted it. Visited Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument – heard Ranger talk & Video talking about the events leading up to the battle as well as the battle itself. Drove the several mile route to see the battle markers and the memorial to U.S. Cavalry and Native Americans. Saw three groups of Bison on the second day in the North Unit. Got close to one group hugging both sides of the road. Visited Lewis & Clark Interpretation Center & Ft Mandan near Washburn. Dinner at Laughing Sun Brewery and BBQ – good food. Went to the movies the next day. A couple of local walks with Rio. • 77 – Hancock Recreational Area Campground – across river from Houghton – nice place but only 30-amp for our site (#15) but no water or sewer @ site. Visited Isle Royale National Park for a night. Took Ferry from Copper Harbor to the island – about 3-hours each way. Stayed @ Rock Harbor Lodge. Had very nice view of outer harbor. Food was okay, but not bad considering the location. Nice place to visit, but you need to canoe or hike the island to see the real beauty – 20+ wolves and 2000+ Moose. Rio stayed with Rover sitter – he got sick for a couple of days – must have eaten something @ the beach with the sitter. If we went back, would stay @ other side of island and would take water taxi to places for day hikes. Also, need to plan better so we could take park tours (no Sundays!). We both got leg cramps the evening of our 5-mile RT hike.
  • 76 – Pictured Rock RV Park in town of Christmas. Nice place but will be better once landscaped. Plan ahead and get RV park next to water nearby. Had to move sites on 3rd night. Nice town. Visited the town of Empire and had lunch @ Shipwrecked Cafe. Hiked around Sleeping Bear Dunes and State Park – very unique and beautiful area. Drove north up to Leland and Fish Town. Bought smoked Trout, sausage and spread. Had dinner overlooking marina and bay. Lots of nice towns along both coasts. Went wine tasting along the inner peninsula – Rio was allowed in a few of the wineries (Brys Estate and Bowers). Great music at Bowers. Dogs not allowed at a couple of the popular breweries, but heard later that some of the newer breweries were okay with dogs. Beautiful houses and cottages along the shore – definitely a beach town vibe in the area.
  • 73 – Krystal Lake Campground. Nice resort with huge ponds in a big horseshoe. Sites somewhat primitive, but some sites have nice trees and view of the ponds. Lots of people swimming and kayaking on the ponds. Very family friendly. Visited Frankenmuth which is a German-Bavarian town. Lots of Bavarian food and drink. Nice place, but the Bavarian deserts in Seattle area islands were spectacular.
  • 72 – KOA Campground. One of the nicest KOAs. Nice tree-lined sites with ponds on one side. Visited Cuyahoga NP. The Ohio-Erie Canal is a big part of the appeal. The Ledges scenic area was very unique and could have spent more time there.
